A day at Daylesford Cookery School

Those of you who are following me on Facebook or Twitter might have seen some pictures of Andrew and me attending a cooking day at Daylesford near Kingham in Gloucestershire last Saturday.  We had a lot of fun and I learnt a lot of new skills from the chef, James. 

I am surprised how few people know of Daylesford. I love Daylesford, a quick Sunday afternoon drink and shop at Daylesford is one of my favourite activities. Daylesford produces and sells organic vegetables, dairy products, meat, bakery and wine.  It also sells home accessories i.e. fig leaf candles (my all time favourite)! Of course, don’t miss visiting Hay Barn Spa – you can have a private yoga session or just a relaxing massage. 

There is over two thousand acres of farmland behind the farm shop and spa where Daylesford produces a lot of their goodies including their very own creamery for dairy products.  In between the busy cooking and learning, we had the chance to stroll around the kitchen garden, with acres of land full of vegetables and fruits and a number of poly tunnels which had tons and tons of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and herbs! I certainly took some ideas home from their kitchen garden. 

Back to the cooking class, Andrew was a little bit worried that he would be out of his depth as his cooking skills are limited to fried eggs and grilled bacon! Despite this we did not feel left out or struggle (until Andrew tried to fry Sea Bass!) The atmosphere was very relaxed and James was extremely patient with all of us. The theme of the day was ‘A Taste of Provence’, so all the dishes were made from seasonal produce available in Provence now. In just one day I learnt to makeGeneral short pastry, ice cream, chicken broth and acquired other basic cooking skills, which I didn’t previously know. I even learnt the proper way of holding a knife and chopping vegetables.

We ate what we made and enjoyed complementary sparkling wine and rose to go with the dishes.  At the end of the day, we were presented with a certificate, which also served as a discount card to shop at Daylesford. All in all, it was a fun day and we are already talking about doing another cookery course soon. 

Over the next few weeks I will be re-doing all the dishes I learnt on the day. So stay tuned and check out all these super healthy recipes, which do not require fancy ingredients and cooking skills!
